Learning and Performance through Peer Coaching

Meeting Overview:

It’s well understood in the field of learning and development that 70% of learning is informal, on the job, and experience based; 20% is coaching and mentoring; and 10% is comprised of formal learning interventions and structured courses. But what does this mean in practice?

This session will showcase a peer coaching leadership development methodology that builds community, stimulates exchange of perspectives, and encourages team cohesion. It is an innovative adaptation of the 70/20/10 approach to leadership development and organizational transformation. The use of this peer coaching methodology uses practical tools to explore a wide range of topics.

These tools were created by more than forty leading management thinkers including Henry Mintzberg, Marshall Goldsmith, David Cooperrider, and Michael Beers.

Meeting Objectives:

  1. Learn about the application of social and informal learning (70/20/10) for management and organizational development, and gain insight into leveraging the framework in your organization.
  2. Learn about the impact of using the methodology developed by Henry Mintzberg of CoachingOurselves through review of select case studies and a hands-on workshop.
  3. Understand the lessons learned when developing and deploying peer coaching solutions.



Phil LeNir is Co-founder and President of CoachingOurselves, a company he co-founded with Henry Mintzberg.

Phil has delivered numerous speeches on CoachingOurselves’ unique peer coaching approach in Canada, Europe, and Asia. Prior to developing CoachingOurselves, Phil held senior technical management positions in companies such as Nuance, SpeechWorks and Systemcorp, in which roles he addressed the challenges of mergers, rapid growth, and the dotcom crash.

Phil has authored numerous articles on social learning, written a book that has been published in Japan: “Social and Informal Learning for Managers”, and holds a patent on Speech Recognition and Speaker Verification using distributed speech processing. Phil holds a Masters of Management and Honors Engineering degree from McGill University in Canada.

The Canisius Center for Professional Development is located in Amherst, NY. Directions: Take the 290 expressway, and exit on Millersport Highway going north. At the first light (by the Marriott), make a left onto Flint Road. Make a left turn on to Maple Road. At the next signal, make a left turn on to Corporate Parkway. At the stop sign, turn right. The building is on your left side. The parking lot (no charge) is on your right. Complimentary coffee is available.
