Although many professionals are familiar with the benefits of “systems thinking,” few have received an in-depth explanation of the theory behind the family systems movement.

Developed in the latter half of the twentieth century by health care professionals who were no longer satisfied with the medical model, Family Systems Theory began to address human psychology in terms of a multigenerational family instead of a defective individual.

This new way of thinking encourages people to accept more individual responsibility and avoid blaming others for life’s problems.

Knowledge of the Bowen Family Systems Theory can help adult learners in at least three ways:

  1. improve their skills in serving people who come to them for help by not defaulting to blaming the “identified patient” and seeing how everyone in a system can share in the responsibility for the presenting problem;
  2. enhance their self-knowledge and leadership skills by showing them how their own unresolved family-of-origin issues can impact their professional relationships and work place performance;
  3. improve the quality of their work relationships by teaching them how their workplace is a system which also functions according to the principles of systems theory.
