Overview

EQ is hot topic, and for good reason. If you haven’t been exposed to the genesis of how emotions made their way into applied behavioral science—and the workplace— this talk will enlighten you. If you have been exposed to EQ, EI, or EC, then you already know the power, and the value, in which case this discussion will further empower you and open your horizons to the latest strategies and technologies for turning awareness into actionable development.

Baselining your leaders against a norm, or an average in terms of EQ is a one-dimensional approach to building greater EQ. It might prove a helpful first step, but building EQ for leadership is a long haul journey.

We’ve found a successful model for development starts with a focus on a critical competency set (specific to the individual, the team, and the role) combined with several additional key ingredients:

  • 360’s from peers, managers, and direct reports
  • Relevant, actionable micro-content delivered at the speed of need;
  • Written Action Planning, periodically updated, (re)applied and reflected upon; and,
  • Coaching, and/or Mentoring (as distinct from performance management) to round out the emerging leader

Combined, these critical reinforcement mechanisms can transform a singular assessment, or a manager training event from being a mildly amusing (but soon forgotten) transaction, into a robust and dynamic journey of development.
